Dry Eye: What Is It? What Are the Symptoms?

Stinging, burning, or scratchy eyes can indicate a medical condition commonly known as "dry eye".

A normal functioning eye constantly bathes itself in tears. This keeps the eye moist and comfortable. When this doesn't happen, dry eye occurs.

While men also suffer from this condition, women are the more likely to contract dry eye, especially after menopause.

Here are the most common symptoms of dry eye:
  • "stinging" or "burning" feeling in eyes
  • "scratchiness"
  • mucous in or around eyes
  • eye irritation from wind or smoke
  • excessive tearing
  • discomfort in eyes

If you suffer from one or more of these symptoms, see your eye care provider as soon as possible. He or she can suggest a plan of treatment to combat dry eye.
